Tongyeong Travel Guide: Cable Car, Island Ferries and Chungmu Gimbap

Quick answer
- Tongyeong is a harbor town for islands, seafood and Admiral Yi Sun-sin's naval history. Ride the cable car up Mireuksan (adults ₩17,000 return), see Sebyeonggwan Hall (adults ₩3,000) and take a ferry to Hansan-do.
- Get there by express bus: Seoul Express Bus Terminal to Tongyeong takes about 4 hours 10 minutes (adult fare example ₩42,200, Udeung class). The bus details here were checked on Kobus.
- Bring your passport for island ferries. Foreign passengers show a valid passport (or alien registration card) to board, and you can't board without ID.
Tongyeong, on Korea's south coast about 4 hours 10 minutes from Seoul by express bus, is the base for the islands of the Hallyeosudo waterway and for Admiral Yi Sun-sin's naval history. Start with the cable car up Mireuksan (adults ₩17,000 return), Sebyeonggwan Hall, a National Treasure (adults ₩3,000), and Chungmu gimbap by the harbor, then take a ferry to Hansan-do (adult fare example ₩6,300 one way). Bring your passport: island ferries check ID.

Skyline Luge Tongyeong
Skyline Luge Tongyeong has four downhill tracks totaling 3.8 km. A 3-ride ticket is ₩34,000 for an adult. Solo riders must be at least 110 cm tall and 6 years old, subject to staff assessment. Tandem riding has additional age, height and ticket restrictions; meeting the minimum age of 2 and height of 85 cm doesn't by itself establish eligibility. The operator lists an 85–120 cm height band for child doubling tickets and requires a tandem guardian aged 19 or over. Check its detailed height bands and confirm borderline cases with staff before buying a ticket. Show your luge ticket (not just a receipt) at the cable car for ₩2,000 off, within 2 days; with a family ticket the discount covers up to five people, and it can't be combined with other discounts.

Sebyeonggwan Hall and Tongjeyeong

Tongjeyeong was the headquarters of the Joseon navy's commander of the three southern provinces, in use until 1895. Its main hall, Sebyeonggwan, was first built in 1605 and rebuilt on a larger scale in 1646; it's a National Treasure (designated 2002). Tongyeong City calls it one of the largest Joseon-era buildings by floor area, open-sided, with no walls or windows between its 50 columns, and says the name means "washing weapons in the stream of the Milky Way."
| Hours | The foundation that runs it lists 09:00–18:00 with last tickets at 17:30, but the city lists a 17:00 closing from November to February. Confirm the current cutoff, and don't plan a 17:30 arrival in winter |

| Free day | The last Wednesday of the month ("Culture Day") |

| Getting there | Get off at the Tongyeong Depart (통영데파트) bus stop, about a minute's walk |

Hansan-do: Admiral Yi's island
Hansan-do is where Admiral Yi Sun-sin set up his naval command during the Japanese invasions: in August 1593 he built the Unjudang there. It was destroyed in 1597, and Jeseungdang, the hall you visit today, was rebuilt on its site in 1740. Tongyeong City's fee list shows Jeseungdang as free.

Gangguan harbor, Dongpirang and the markets

- Gangguan: the old harbor in the middle of town. Nearby are exhibits of Joseon-era warships, including the Geobukseon (turtle ship) and the panokseon, Tongyeong City says.
- Dongpirang: a hillside village above Gangguan where the murals along its winding lanes are renewed through painting contests. At the top, the Dongporu pavilion looks over the harbor.
- Jungang Market: across from Gangguan, a seafood market selling fish caught off Tongyeong, the city says. Seoho Market is the town's other traditional market.
