Local tip: Seoul's "official" cherry blossom is a designated standard tree at the Seoul weather station, and the Korea Meteorological Administration's Seoul cherry blossom records go back to 1922. Bloom dates vary from year to year, so check KMA's spring-flower status on its Weather Nuri site (Korean) before you fix your dates.
Our take: April and May are the easiest months for walking-heavy sightseeing. Bring a light jacket for April evenings.

Holidays: plan around Seollal and Chuseok

Korea's Seollal (Lunar New Year) and Chuseok holidays are set by the lunar calendar, so their dates on the regular calendar change each year. Holiday KTX trains have their own booking schedule and rules, separate from the normal two-month window, so check Korail's notices and book early if your trip overlaps.

Before you book

  1. Pick your season with the month-by-month table above.
  2. Traveling June to August? Pack for heat, humidity and heavy rain.
  3. Traveling December to February? Pack warm layers; Busan and Jeju are milder than Seoul.
  4. Check whether your dates overlap Seollal or Chuseok, and book trains early if they do.
  5. Check the forecast a week before you go: averages aren't a forecast.
