Quick answer

  • One passenger ferry is on the Busan Port timetable for Fukuoka: the New Camellia. It leaves Busan at 22:30 and docks at Hakata at about 07:30 the next morning. No fast ferry is listed as of Nov 2, 2026.
  • Adult one-way list fare from Busan: ₩150,000 in 2nd class (from Oct 1, 2026), plus ₩21,000 in surcharges and port fees for tickets issued Oct–Dec. Round-trip and student discounts ended on Sept 30, 2026.
  • Don't assume it sails every day. Official pages say daily in some places and six a week in others, and New Year sailings differ, so check the operator's calendar before booking anything else.

Older guides still show a 3-hour fast ferry, Queen Beetle, but its operator pulled out in 2025.

The ship is run by Camellia Line, with Korea Ferry as its Busan agent. Sailing dates and check-in deadlines can change. Check the operator's live calendar and the deadline on your booking confirmation before travelling to the terminal.

What happened to Queen Beetle

JR Kyushu's high-speed ferry, Queen Beetle, started on the Fukuoka–Busan route in November 2022. JR Kyushu announced its withdrawal on Dec 23, 2024, saying it couldn't fully rule out the risk of hull cracks, and its company history lists the exit on Feb 28, 2025. As of Nov 2, 2026, Busan Port's timetable shows no fast ferry to Fukuoka; the fast routes it lists go to Tsushima. Any fare or 3-hour crossing time you find for Queen Beetle is out of date.

Check your sailing date

Official pages call the service daily in some places and six a week in others. Sailing dates and check-in deadlines can change. Check the operator's live calendar (Camellia Line, Japanese) and the deadline on your booking confirmation before travelling to the terminal. Special sailings and service suspensions can change the normal timetable.

  • New Year. Korea Ferry says regular service ends with the Dec 28 Hakata departure, and temporary sailings run Dec 29 to Jan 3. Checked baggage isn't accepted on several of those sailings.
  • April 2027. Booking for Apr 10–30, 2027 is on hold because the dry-dock dates aren't final, Korea Ferry says.

Local tip: Book the ferry before your hotel in Fukuoka, and check your date on the operator's calendar first. This is our suggestion.

Fares and fees

List fares for adults, one way, for bookings from Oct 1, 2026:

Korea Ferry says special rooms and deluxe rooms can be booked only through travel agencies. Children aged 6–11 pay ₩75,000 in a 2nd-class shared room and ages 2–5 pay ₩30,000; other rooms differ. One infant under 2 per adult rides free.

Surcharges and fees are paid on top, at the rate on the day your ticket is issued:

Fuel surcharge₩14,000₩13,060
Departure fee or Japan's international tourist tax₩1,000₩27,990

Round trip: the discount ended on Sept 30, 2026, along with the student discount. Older round-trip prices are out of date. Adding the two rows above, a 2nd-class adult round trip from Busan comes to ₩366,710 (our calculation), though online fares can be lower.

Online fares: Korea Ferry says its website and agencies offer discounted and special fares. We didn't record the amounts, because they depend on availability, and the rules are stricter:

Local tip: Before you take a cheap special fare, remember that you can't change it, and after the first 24 hours you can't get your money back.

Booking

Book on the operator sites: Korea Ferry or Camellia Line. Have your passport details ready.

We couldn't confirm whether cards issued outside Korea or Japan work on each site, so test early and have a backup: Korea Ferry lists counter fares at the terminal.

Getting to the terminals

Busan Port International Passenger Terminal is at 206 Chungjang-daero, Dong-gu. It isn't Busan Station, the coastal ferry terminal or the Yeongdo cruise terminal.

Gimhae AirportPublic transit about 70 min; car about 30 min

Departures are on 3F, along with the ticket counters. Arrivals are on 2F, and baggage drop is on 1F.

Hakata Port International Terminal is at 14-1 Okihamamachi, Hakata-ku. Nishitetsu bus 88 runs from Hakata Station and bus 80 from Tenjin, in about 20 minutes and 15–20 minutes, according to the terminal. The building has an ATM and currency exchange but no convenience store, it says.

Check-in at Busan

Busan Port Authority suggests arriving 2 hours before departure, but go by the deadline on your booking confirmation. An undated Korea Ferry guide gives its own ticketing and baggage times, so check them for your sailing.

Checked baggage has its own window, so ask about it when you book.

Entry rules: Japan and Korea

Requirements depend on your passport. Check these official sources for your nationality.

Into Japan at Hakata. Check Japan's visa exemption list. Korea Ferry says to register arrival details through Visit Japan Web, with one QR code per person, and that a paper customs form is handed out at check-in for Hakata. That's the operator's guidance; the Japanese government pages we read don't mention Hakata specifically, so follow what staff say on the day.

Back into Korea at Busan. If your nationality and entry status require K-ETA, obtain it before boarding the ferry. A temporary exemption, visa, residence status or other exemption may change what you need; an e-Arrival Card may still be required. Korea's temporary K-ETA exemption for listed countries runs until Dec 31, 2026. If you're returning after that, check again. The K-ETA FAQ exempts "cruise tourists," but the New Camellia is a regular ferry and we found nothing saying that exemption covers it. See our K-ETA guide and first-time checklist.

Baggage and what you can't bring

  • Carry-on allowance: free up to 30 kg, with the three sides totaling 200 cm or less and no side over 90 cm, Korea Ferry says.
  • Checked baggage, vehicles and onboard payment: confirm the rules with the operator before booking.
  • Not allowed on board: knives, golf clubs, baseball bats and wooden swords are Korea Ferry's examples. Pets: ask the operator, because its pages differ.
  • Meat into Japan: Japan's Animal Quarantine Service says you can't bring in most animal products, including jerky, ham, sausages, bacon and meat buns, with penalties of up to 3 years in prison or a ¥3 million fine. Check before you pack Korean snacks.
  • Plants into Japan: Some fruits, vegetables and seeds are prohibited, depending on their origin and type. Permitted plants generally need an exporting-country phytosanitary certificate and an arrival inspection, unless specifically exempt. Soil and soil-attached plants are prohibited; check the official database before packing.

Two things worth knowing

  • Seasickness: we found no official advice. A pharmacy on 3F at Busan terminal lists motion-sickness medicine among its stock, open 08:00–18:00.
  • Japan's tax-free shopping changed in November 2026. Korea Ferry says you now pay tax at the shop and claim it back when you leave Japan, within 90 days of purchase. At Hakata Port, it says, only card purchases can be refunded, and the refund happens after check-in. If you shop on cash in Fukuoka, keep this in mind.

Before you go

  • Check the calendar for your date, especially year-end.
  • Reach the right terminal: Busan Port International Passenger Terminal, not Busan Station.
  • Check the check-in and baggage deadlines on your booking confirmation.
  • Passport with no damage: Korea Ferry says damaged ones can't be processed.
  • Fill in Visit Japan Web before you travel to Japan.
  • Have K-ETA sorted if you need it for Korea, before you board.
  • Leave meat snacks out of your bag for Japan.
