Seongsu-dong, Seoul: Pop-ups, Shoe Street and Seoul Forest for Visitors

Graphic of red-brick factory buildings with a tall chimney and a tree, with the title Seongsu-dong, Seoul

Quick answer

  • What it is: an old factory district in eastern Seoul, now full of cafés, flagship stores and pop-ups in converted buildings, right beside Seoul Forest.
  • Pop-ups: we couldn't find an official list of current ones, from Seoul or the district, so we don't list any. They change often. Ask the Seongsu tourist information center (02-466-2286) or the 1330 travel line.
  • Weekends until Nov 29, 2026: parts of Yeonmujang-gil become a pedestrian safety zone on Saturdays and Sundays, 14:00–18:00, with some extra holiday dates. Residents' and delivery vehicles can still enter.

Seongsu-dong is a former factory district in eastern Seoul, reached by subway Line 2, where cafés, flagship stores and short-run pop-ups now fill converted factories and warehouses. Seoul Forest, which is free to enter, sits at its western edge. We couldn't find an official list of what's on this week, so plan on the neighborhood rather than one pop-up.

Station exits may change. A November 2025 news report said a new Exit 3-1 at Seongsu Station was due to finish by December 2026. We couldn't open Seoul Metro's site or find an official opening notice, so follow the signs in the station.

Why it looks the way it does

Seongsu was an industrial area of shoe factories, printing shops and auto-parts makers, with some 3,000 manufacturers at one point, according to Visit Seoul. From the mid-2000s, empty factories and warehouses started turning into shops and workshops. Seongdong-gu was picked for urban regeneration on Dec 26, 2014, and ran the project from April 2015 to December 2019.

Pop-ups: what we can and can't tell you

If you're looking for current Seongsu pop-ups, check the brand's own channels. The honest answer is that we looked at Seongdong-gu, Seoul city, Visit Seoul and KTO, and couldn't find a current list on any of them. That's why this page names no pop-ups and gives no dates.

What the official pages do say is that the turnover is real. Visit Seoul writes that returning visitors are likely to find something different each time. KTO's shopping page, last updated in 2023, sends readers to social media for the newest openings.

We also found no official rule on entry fees, queues or reservations, so don't assume a pop-up is free or walk-in. For general help, call the Seongsu tourist information center on 02-466-2286, or the 1330 travel line (+82-2-1330 from abroad).

Local tip: If you came for one particular pop-up, confirm its dates on the day you go. If it's closed, Seoul Forest and the shoe street are still there. This is our suggestion.

Weekend street closures on Yeonmujang-gil

Seongdong-gu runs a "pedestrian safety street" along the busiest stretch of Yeonmujang-gil. It isn't completely car-free: residents' and workers' cars and delivery vehicles can still use it in part, so keep looking both ways.

Seoul Forest in winter

Seoul Forest opened in 2005, and Visit Seoul says the grounds are open 24 hours with free entry. The Seoul parks office says it's open all year, with some facilities closed on Mondays. Parts of it run on their own hours, and winter closes two of the things people come to see.

Eco Forest05:30–21:30All year
Insect and Botanical GardenNov–Feb 10:00–16:00, last entry 15:30 (Mar–Oct until 17:00)Closed Mondays
Butterfly GardenMay–Oct 10:00–17:00Closed Nov–Apr
Floor fountainMay–Oct, on the hour 12:00–17:00Not running in winter
Visitor center09:00–18:00Open all year

Seoul Parks and Visit Seoul both list winter hours of 10:00–16:00 for the Insect and Botanical Garden from November to February, with last admission at 15:30 and closure on Mondays.

A few rules catch people out. The parks office says Seoul Forest is a no-fly zone for drones, that tents including sunshades aren't allowed, and that dogs need a leash of 2 m or less. There's no bike rental inside the park, and a February 2026 notice restricted bicycles and group running during construction, without an end date. Check the signs if you plan to cycle.

The handmade shoe street

Seongdong-gu's own history traces the trade to shoe shops around Yeomcheongyo, near Seoul Station, and says shoe factories gathered in Seongsu after the 1997 financial crisis scattered workshops from nearby Geumho-dong. The district now treats handmade shoes as a designated local industry.

Its joint shoe shops line the 630 m stretch from Seongsu Station to the Seoul Metro substation, with another group at Ttukseom Station. Visit Seoul gives Seongsu Station Exit 1 for the street.

Numbers vary by source and year. Official pages have put the number of shoe businesses anywhere from about 350 to about 500, so treat any single figure with care. We found no official hours for the joint shops and no official price or turnaround time for made-to-order pairs, so ask at the shop.

Shopping and tax refunds

Visit Seoul describes flagship stores and select shops here but publishes no price guide, and we don't rank them. Tax refund depends on the store. On KTO's 2023 Seongsu shopping page, the shops it lists show tax refund as not available, so don't assume every shop offers it. Ask before you pay, and see our tax refund guide for the rules. For cosmetics, see our K-beauty guide.

Before you go

  • Decide your station: Seongsu for the shoe street and shops, Seoul Forest or Ttukseom for the park.
  • Check any pop-up on the brand's own channel, on the day.
  • Coming on a weekend afternoon until Nov 29? Expect the Yeonmujang-gil pedestrian zone, 14:00–18:00.
  • Coming in winter? The Insect and Botanical Garden closes at 16:00 and on Mondays, and the Butterfly Garden is shut.
  • Leave the drone at the hotel for Seoul Forest.
  • Ask about tax refund before you pay.
